How you can help older people
What do you look forward to when you think about Christmas? A tree full of lights and tinsel? Family and friends coming to visit? Giving and receiving presents and the surprise of getting something really nice and unexpected? A Christmas table groaning under the weight of turkey, roast potatoes and Christmas pudding? Having a few glasses of wine or beer and settling down for 40 winks in a warm, comfortable home?
We see many older people who do not have any of these comforts at Christmas. They live in a cold, draughty house and don’t have the money for repairs or are too scared of the bills to turn the heating up or have the lights on the Christmas tree turned on. Partners and friends have died and family moved away. They can’t afford luxuries like turkey with all the trimmings or wine.
At this time of year loneliness and want are particularly hard to bear and photographs of Christmases past can be a poignant reminder of how much has been lost.
It doesn’t have to be like this. With your help we can make life better for a local older person, not just at Christmas, but all year round. We can arrange for volunteer visitors to take away some of the loneliness and to bring a bit of the Christmas spirit back. We can buy hampers to be distributed to older people who can’t afford a nice Christmas dinner and we can help individuals with information and advice to claim all of the money they are entitled to so that they no longer fear turning the heating up in winter.
All of these things are possible with your support. If you would like to help us make life better for local older people then please act today
