Take a Look At Our Services
Befriending and Reablement
We know that many local, older people are lonely. The death of a partner, family moving away, loss of friends after giving up work all contribute to increasing isolation. There is no shame in being lonely and it isn’t unusual. Over half of the over 75’s live alone and 40% say that the television is their main source of company. We can help by providing a volunteer befriender who is matched specifically to you so that you will share some interests in common. The difference regular company and attention can make is amazing – “I used to look at 4 walls, now I look forward to Joan’s visit”.
There are times in our life where we desperately need someone to open up to who won’t judge us or tell us what to do, but will listen and help us come to our own solutions. This is what our counsellors do. We see people who are grieving after a bereavement, people who are coming to terms with the end of their life and people who are depressed or anxious and don’t always know why. “Thank you so much, I didn’t ever think I would laugh again”.
Nearly all of us have some problems managing practical daily living tasks as we get older. Keeping the house clean, for example, can be too much to manage, but for an older person who has always been house proud it can be a source of embarrassment and worry. Our Homecare service takes care of these practical tasks for you. We will do cleaning, shopping, make meals, escort you out if you feel unsafe, help you get up and get dressed or take a shower – basically we will help with whatever you need to manage in your home. “I know it sounds silly, but knowing my house is clean means I can have friends come round again”.
Support for Veterans
We don’t forget the sacrifices our armed forces veterans have made for us and so we try to give a little back. We offer information, advice, social groups and help to find the support which older veterans need. “It’s good to meet up with other old soldiers and remember barrack days”
Keeping fit and having fun
As we get older it is vitally important that we keep our body healthy and in good order. To help with this we offer chair based exercise classes, a cycling group (the Chain Gang) and the Active Strollers walking group. Our view is that if exercise is social and fun then it doesn’t feel as much like hard work. “I really love going on the walks, they’re just the right distance and pace for me and the group are a good laugh”.
