Befriending Services – here to help you
We have two Befriending Services: one in Liverpool and one in Sefton. Our Liverpool Befriending Service is available to anyone over 65 and in Sefton anyone over 50.
Here’s how our service helped one of our clients:
Our client was a 75 year old woman. She lived alone having been widowed some years previously.
Our client used to see one of her friends regularly, but her friend had moved out of the area recently so contact was mainly by phone. Our client used to go to a local lunch club regularly, but hadn’t been for a while since having a fall and being in hospital. She said she missed going to the lunch the club but lacked confidence to go there on her own.
There were steep stairs to the front and rear of the client’s property, which made it difficult for our client to enter and exit the house and garden. This added to her worries about leaving the house.
Her Befriending Re-ablement Officer (BRO) arranged for an Occupational Therapy assessment. Her BRO suggested she could accompany the lady to her lunch club by taxi, and checked with the organiser that it would be OK for her to do so.
The following week her BRO went with the lady to her lunch club by taxi. Her friends were very pleased to see her again and she said she really enjoyed being back. The organiser told our client about a trip they were taking the following week, and invited her to join them.
The following week our client got a taxi to the lunch club by herself, and her BRO met her there. After lunch she rang a taxi and her BRO saw her safely into it. She had agreed to go on the trip the following week, and she would be getting picked up from her home address and dropped off again later.
The Occupational Therapy assessment was conducted, and a ramp was fitted to make it easier for her to enter and exit her property, which she found much better. Handrails were put in the bathroom to make it safer for her, and reduce the risk of further falls.
Our client went out on the trip with the lunch club and really enjoyed it. She started attending the lunch club every week again, going to and fro by taxi unaccompanied. Her mood was much improved by having regular interaction with friends at the lunch club.
She thanked her BRO for helping to facilitate it all and said she felt much more confident going out and felt she had regained her independence.
