Information & Advice – volunteers required
Age Concern Liverpool & Sefton offer a free information and advice service from both our Liverpool and Sefton offices. The charity, dedicated to protecting and promoting the welfare of people aged 50+, are looking for Information and Advice volunteers to assist members of the public with their queries.
Age Concern Liverpool and Sefton are the world’s first Age Concern, founded in 1928. The charity prides themselves on offering advice and support to local residents in person and on the telephone.
The Sefton office, 8-10 Hoghton Street, Southport is open to members of the public 10am-4pm Monday to Friday for drop in sessions with our Information and Advice volunteers. The volunteers provide help, advice and support to local people covering a range of queries, from assistance with energy providers to help with choosing a care home. The volunteers also offer benefits checks and can help with filling in forms such as blue badge applications.
The help and guidance offered by the Information and Advice team of volunteers means a great deal to the customers they see. One lady spoke of how thankful she was of the support she was given:
“I used to be too scared to open the post. I would never have my heating on during the day as I was frightened of not being able to afford it. I’d go to the shops in the daytime to keep warm.
Then, last year a lady from the Information and Advice Team helped me apply for Pension Credit. This has meant that I can now have my heating on during the day and have money for food. Also, If I have any post that I’m worried about I know I can simply take it to the volunteers at Age Concern Liverpool & Sefton and they can help me work through it and can telephone agencies on my behalf. This has taken so much worry off me and is helping me enjoy life again. I am so grateful for all their help. “
In order to continue to provide this invaluable service, Age Concern Liverpool & Sefton are currently asking anyone who may be interested in becoming an Information and Advice volunteer to please get in touch today. Prior to commencing the role, volunteers spend time with the Information & Advice team members until they feel confident. An office induction is provided and training to gain an understanding of the charities products and services and common queries you may encounter.
Information and Advice volunteers are a priceless addition to the services offered by Age Concern Liverpool & Sefton and help many local people daily. Volunteers themselves get a lot out of giving their time. One Information and Advice volunteer, who has been with the service for a number of years said:
“I have been volunteering in the Information & Advice team for ten years now and enjoy the work tremendously. Every day is different; I can speak to someone about getting a new boiler, to someone about choosing a care home and then to someone who would like a benefits check. I enjoy the variety of queries along with the satisfaction of knowing I have supported someone when they needed it. I am proud to be part of the team that offers this free service to local residents”.
Age Concern Liverpool & Sefton are looking for volunteers with previous experience of benefits related work, AA, PIP benefits checks etc. We are also looking for Outreach I&A volunteers to go into people’s homes in order to assist local people with completing benefit applications. If you have worked in an advice giving role before and feel confident navigating older people’s benefits then this role would be perfect for you.
